Subpopulations are defined by the IUCN Red List as “geographically or otherwise distinct groups in a population between which there is little demographic or genetic exchange (typically one successful migrant individual or gamete per year or less)”.

An Evolutionarily Significant Units (ESU) is “a lineage demonstrating highly restricted gene flow from other such lineages within the higher organizational level (lineage) of the species (Fraser & Bernatchez, 2001), due to the limited gene flow they follow their own evolutionary trajectory and thus house unique adaptive variation (Funk et al., 2014). To delineate distinct ESUs, we suggest the need of some genetic/genomic evidence.

A probable Evolutionarily Significant Unit (pESU) is a term unique to this framework and is reserved for situations where a lineage displays the features of an ESU (i.e. compelling evidence) but is lacking data to be scored as such. This lack of data should be due to an absence of attempted analyses or low analytical power in studies that could have limited their results (e.g. data only from a small number of
genetic markers).

Gene flow is the transfer or movement of genetic material among populations. This arises from the dispersal and successful reproduction of individuals outside of their natal population.

Please note:
Within a species a single ESUs can be composed of several subpopulations, a metapopulation,
or a single population. There can also be more than one ESU within a species or no
distinguishable ESUs, this is highly species specific and requires the full framework to define.

Scoring:

  • 10 points or higher = distinct ESU
  • Below 10 points:

a) 10 points cannot be reached or exceeded (even if all missing data were supportive of the tested scenario) =no support for the  ESU – Scenario.

b) 10 points are currently not reached or exceeded, but could if missing data subsequently prove to be supportive of the tested scenario = scenario indicates possible ESUs (pESUs)*

*However, if a candidate scenario currently only scores in recorded biological evidence-types (so non-genetic), the scenario should be regarded as ‘data-deficient’ rather than as a pESU scenario.
